Damian Marley has announced that he, in partnership with Ocean Grown Extracts, is converting a former 77,000 square foot California State prison into a cannabis grow space that will cultivate medical marijuana for state dispensaries. “Many people sacrificed so much for the herb over the years who got locked up,” says Marley, 38, noting the poetic justice of turning a prison that once housed non-violent drug offenders into a cannabis cultivation facility. “If this [venture] helps people and it’s used for medicinal purposes and … Read entire article »

BOB MARLEY’S CONTROVERSIAL ACCOUNTANT, MARVIN ZOLT, DIES AT 95!

Bob Marley— Marvin Zolt, Bob Marley’s controversial former accountant, died August 25 in the United States. His obituary in The Berkshire Eagle newspaper gave his age as 95. In 1995, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit said that for five years after Marley’s death (in 1981), his lawyer David J Steinberg and his accountant Marvin Zolt, “developed and implemented numerous schemes that allegedly diverted foreign music assets and royalty income from Marley’s estate to themselves”. HOW DID THE LANGUAGE OF JAMAICA BECOME MAINSTREAM IN CANADA?

Dancehall and reggae music helped bring patois to the world, but it’s more than just slang — it’s a language of freedom.— By ETERNITY MARTIS— As a Torontonian, it’s not unusual to see white guys shake hands while greeting each other with a, wa gwaan? I wouldn’t say I particularly enjoy witnessing this — actually, it can feel quite painful — and it’s even worse when they point to the man dem over there, or unfurl several bombaclat’s. I wanted to crawl into a hole that time I encountered a bunch of dudes shouting “Gaza mi seh!” Over the past few years, most certainly because of Drake, these instances of public patois faux pas have increased. It seems like everyone has a take on what they perceive as Drake-cabulary — phrases like … Read entire article »

LEE “SCRATCH” PERRY SPEAKS ABOUT MAKING BOB MARLEY, HELPING TO INVENT REGGAE MUSIC!

By Pete Chambers— If you ever get the chance, have a conversation with Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. Half an hour with the man behind some of the greatest music ever made – his own and other people’s – is thick with Biblical allusions, lashings of fire, ice and thunder, protestations of greatness, rap, rhyme and occasional bouts of reason. Packed with long and winding sentences where he’s toasting not speaking, there’s also lots of laughter. His very being reminds us to not accept pop stars who are remotely normal. Let them be different, wildly different, he seems to say… let them be otherworldly, breathlessly brilliant, supernaturally creative; let them take you to another place. There’s a moment when he even sings to me, my own private Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry gig, a fragile and soul-squashing version of … Read entire article »
