THE TRENCH TOWN CULTURE YARD GETS JAMAICA TOURIST BOARD LICENCE TO OPERATE!

BRITISH-BORN, REGGAE AFROBEAT SINGER SEYI SHAY, IS BUILDING BRIDGES BETWEEN GENRES!

 Seyi Shay— A British singer, citing historical ties between reggae and African music, says it is critical that artists from the two genres establish lasting bonds. Seyi Shay, a Universal Records artist, made this observation during her June 17 lecture at the University of the West Indies’ Mona campus, under the theme ‘Marketing In The Music Industry’. “That’s why I’m here. ACADEMY AWARD-WINNING FILM-MAKER, BARRY MORROW, YEARNS TO DO MOVIE ON BOB MARLEY!

Bottom: Reggae legend Bob Marley— IT was the summer of 1974 and, according to film-maker Barry Morrow, “every long-haired youth in the US was digging (Eric) Clapton’s hit, I Shot The Sheriff ”. Not long after, those youth, which included Morrow, discovered that the song was written and originally done the previous year by Bob Marley and The Wailers. Yesterday was 35 years since Marley died from cancer at age 36. I Shot The Sheriff struck a chord with Morrow, who later won an Academy award for Best Original Screenplay as co-writer of the 1988 film, Rain Man. Smith, 60, refers to the cherished instrument as ‘the reggae guitar of the world’, given the countless hit songs he has played on.   Among its biggest gigs were the 1975 recording sessions for Rastaman Vibration, Bob Marley and The Wailers’ album that was released the following year by Island Records.That set was Marley’s third for Island Records. REMEMBERING JACOB “JAKES” MILLER, MAY 4, 1952 – MARCH 23, 1980!

By Brian Bonitto —  Jacob Miller—- NEARLY four decades after his death, Jacob ‘Jakes’ Miller’s legacy is alive and well, according to Inner Circle founding member Roger Lewis. Miller, who died in a auto accident, would have celebrated his 64th birthday today. Lewis, guitarist for the Grammy-winning band, spoke about the singer’s legacy. “During his lifetime, Jakes’s contribution to Jamaica’s music was instrumental. As a singer/songwriter/social commentator, his music reflected the mood of the society,” Lewis told the Jamaica Observer from his Florida base yesterday. “He was one of the headliners at the One Love Peace Concert in Kingston in ’78.
