Guitatist Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith— RESPECTED guitarist Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith says Jamaican administrators missed a golden opportunity by not showcasing the country’s music at the recent National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) in Anaheim, California. Smith attended the January 21-24 show at Anaheim Convention Center. The annual event, a must-go for musicians, attracted 100,000 persons over four days. It was the second visit at NAMM for the veteran session musician. He said one of its most popular attractions was a John Lennon booth where the former Beatle’s legacy was honored by musicians who performed his songs. In addition, organizers of the booth donated US$14,000 of equipment daily, including four Epiphone Casino guitars which Lennon consistently used throughout his career. “With an artist like Bob Marley wid such a strong message, there should have been a presence. … Read entire article »

Bob Marley— This is the first of a seven-part feature, commissioned by Red Stripe, celebrating the life and legacy of the Honourable Robert Nesta Marley, OM, on the 71st anniversary of his birth. NO music so defines a nation as Jamaica’s iconic reggae. Evolving from ska and rocksteady, the genre emerged in the 1960s, grabbing the attention of gifted musicians and singers who would later become giants. But none would be greater than young Robert Nesta Marley. The year was 1962, and the song was Judge Not, a ska tune that was Marley’s first recording at 16. Few suspected that the diminutive artiste from rustic Nine Miles in St Ann would be as impactful as he was, but by 1964 Bob Marley and the Wailers had made a name for themselves. “They had a … Read entire article »

ROCKER STEVE FORBERT “WILL NEVER FORGET BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS!”

Steve Forbert will never forget the performance of Bob Marley and the Wailers with the I-Threes at New York’s Madison Square Garden in June 1978. It was “the best rock show I ever saw,” says Forbert. “Those girls in their red, green, and yellow [clothing] moved and looked like apparitions around a campfire – and it was smoky. The venue air had a certain thick, pungent odor that night as Bob rather quickly turned that cavern into, oh, The Rainbow in London – a regular night club.” Forbert attended that concert with Linda Stein, who managed Forbert and the Ramones. Attending with Stein “made it even more fun,” Forbert recalls, because “this was right up her alley. All she ever listened to was Bob Marley and [The Rolling Stones album] Some Girls.
