It’s been eight years and the artiste born Shauna McKenzie continues to make music, but along the way the entrepreneurial fire has raged inside her, creating another income stream. “Etana is a brand… it’s not just the music, it’s everything that comes with the artist. ALBUM REVIEW BY AUGUS TAYLOR: “ONWARDS AND UPWARDS FOR ETANA’S I RISE!”

Etana – the soft-spoken singer songwriter with the room-shaking voice – had a promising start with albums The Strong One and Free Expressions. However, she really came into her own with Shane Brown produced third effort Better Tomorrow, where she reoriented her soul-reggae fusion towards fierier roots. It was a side to her always evidenced by moments on her earlier records such as Jah Chariot or War. And with fourth album I Rise she takes it even further: reflecting the shift in Jamaican reggae away from pop and R&B to the harder sounds of decades gone by (a change Etana often supported in interviews – asking why the foundation didn’t get more radio play). Project manager here is the great Clive Hunt – producer of the Abyssinians, multi-instrumentalist and horn arranger extraordinaire. A melismatic opening intro of Mortimer Planno/Artie Glen’s Selassie is the Chapel might suggest an hour of gospel balladry – … Read entire article »

THE “WELCOME TO JAMROCK” CRUISE MAKES WAVES ON THE CARIBBEAN SEA!

Busy Signal— By Davina Henry— It was almost too perfect. With the Caribbean Sea and beautiful Jamaican night sky providing a picturesque backdrop, the bass-filled beats of hardcore dancehall and soulful melodies of reggae combined perfectly. No, it was not a movie. It was the third day of the first Welcome To Jamrock Cruise, organised by Damian ‘Junior Gong’ Marley. The cruise, which kicked off in Miami, had already featured performances from Julian ‘Juju’ Marley, Tarrus Riley and Shaggy. On Wednesday night, for the leg off the Jamaican coast, Etana, dubbed ‘The Strong One’, opened the show with a spectacular performance. Delivering popular songs such as Warrior Love, Blessings and Free, Etana delivered a commanding performance to the very receptive audience. Upcoming artist Jo Mersa Marley joined her for their duet, Thy Will Be Done. Singer Jah Cure delivered what was arguably one of his better performances. It … Read entire article »

Also sharing creative input on the upcoming project were Ian from C-Sharpe, Sherieta Lewis, Kirk ‘Kirkledove’ Bennett and Sly Dunbar. “The songs on this album are well constructed, not just produced,” said Etana. The new direction did have some hitches. “The song Jamaica Girl (written by Cooper), I thought it had a Festival feel so I asked for the … Read entire article »
