(Garfield Robinson)— Organizers of the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA) Honor Awards stressed its importance Sunday at the Courtleigh Auditorium in New Kingston. “I just want to thank everyone that has stayed with the JaRIA awards for the past nine years,” said Ibo Cooper, JaRIA chairman. For Cooper, the strong turnout of artists and fans was a direct response to the clamoring for Jamaica’s version of the Grammy Awards. THE RITA MARLEY FOUNDATION TO HONOR FAB 5’s ASTLEY “GRUB” COOPER!

By Shereita Grizzle— Astley ‘Grub’ Cooper Dr Rita Marley and the Rita Marley Foundation (JA) will be honoring master vocalist, musical arranger, producer and drummer Astley ‘Grub’ Cooper for his contributions to Jamaica’s musical heritage. Rosemary Duncan, manager at the Rita Marley Foundation (JA), praised Cooper for his contributions to the country’s growing musical heritage. “Grub has undoubtedly made immeasurable contributions to Jamaica’s music and culture. For this reason, Dr Marley and the foundation find him most deserving of this inaugural award,” she said. He spoke exclusively with the Jamaica Observer last weekend. “If is one thing I know, my mother is a strong, strong woman. She is doing much, much better and is in Florida with (my sister) Cedella and other family members,” he said. A former member of the sibling group the Melody Makers, Cedella Marley is CEO of the family-owned Tuff Gong International.  Rita Marley– OBSERVER ONLINE has been reliably informed that Rita Marley, widow of reggae superstar Bob Marley, has been admitted to a Miami hospital after suffering a major stroke in the United States city last night. Sources have informed the Observer that Marley is in Miami to attend an event, but her appearance has been cancelled. It is understood that she had suffered a stroke before, but this is considered the most serious and members of the family have been tight-lipped about her condition, but have been closely monitoring her condition. Seventy-year-old Marley, born Alpharita Anderson in Santiago de Cuba in July 1946, is the mother of three of Bob’s 13 children — David (Ziggy), Cedella and Stephen. BOB MARLEY’S CONTROVERSIAL ACCOUNTANT, MARVIN ZOLT, DIES AT 95!

 Bob Marley— Marvin Zolt, Bob Marley’s controversial former accountant, died August 25 in the United States. His obituary in The Berkshire Eagle newspaper gave his age as 95. In 1995, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit said that for five years after Marley’s death (in 1981), his lawyer David J Steinberg and his accountant Marvin Zolt, “developed and implemented numerous schemes that allegedly diverted foreign music assets and royalty income from Marley’s estate to themselves”. According to a 1995 story in the New York Times, the court said “the schemes were carried out with the aid of Mr Marley’s widow, Rita”. The United States Court of Appeals upheld a 1993 ruling by the Federal Court in Manhattan.
