 By Shereita Grizzle— Rita Marley—- “There couldn’t be a more perfect day to recognize the winners of the second annual Rita Marley Foundation (RMF) Essay Competition than International Reggae Day,” said Amina Blackwood-Meeks as she welcomed guests to the awards ceremony held at the multi functional room at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, on Wednesday morning. Several students from five high schools across the island, along with their teachers, attended the ceremony, and although they gathered to hear the announcements, they were treated to much more. The teenagers were celebrated for their academic excellence, the judges beaming with pride as they spoke about the quality of work produced by the 2015 entrants. JULIAN MARLEY WORKING ON HIS NEXT ALBUM DUE EARLY NEXT YEAR!

 Julian Marley— JULIAN Marley is working on his fourth album which is expected to be out early next year. According to the 40-year-old singer, it will display his maturity as an artist. “A lot of creativity will be on the album. Creativity is something that flows each day and everyday life is an experience. I have matured and progressed a lot since my last album,” said Marley. Marley worked mainly with producers at Ghetto Youths International on the project. He is co-owner of that label along with his brothers Stephen and Damian, who produced his current single, Lemme Go. ZIGGY MARLEY CONFIRMS HIS MOTHER RITA, IS “DOING GOOD FOLLOWING SOME PHYSICAL AILMENTS!”

RITA Marley— RITA Marley, the widow of reggae legend Bob Marley, is currently recovering after some health challenges last year. Rita’s son Ziggy confirmed that his mother was “doing good” following what he described as “some physical ailments”. The reggae king’s widow was noticeably absent from the celebrations to mark Marley’s 70th birthday last weekend. “She’s at the stage now where she’s slowing down and taking things easy, but she’s doing good,” Marley told the Jamaica Observer. Rita and Bob Marley were married on February 10, 1966. She became part of his backing vocalists the I-Three, which also comprised Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt. In addition to a new musical celebrating his life and works to be opened in January, the Rita Marley Foundation has announced a public-speaking competition to commemorate the special occasion. As part of the 11th annual Africa Unite Youth Symposium, the competition will see six students from high schools across the island vie for the Rita Marley Foundation Trophy of Excellence in Public Speaking on February 12, 2015, just a week after Marley’s 70th birthday. The two appeared in Episode Four of Season Two of the programme which aired last Sunday, and is titled ‘How Honeybee Got her Groove Back’. Black Dynamite, a suggestive adult cartoon series, is based on the 2009 film of the same name. AUDITIONS ARE OPEN FOR MUSICAL BASED ON THE LIFE OF BOB MARLEY!

Directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah, the musical will look at the impact Marley had on Jamaica and the world. More a dozen roles are up for grabs in this musical scheduled for May 13 to June 14 in Baltimore, Maryland. THE RITA MARLEY FOUNDATION ESSAY COMPETITION TO GO NATIONAL!

Rita Marley— By Shereita Grizzle– It was the first staging, and the organisers opted to test the waters by only accepting entries from four schools across the island. Papine High, Marcus Garvey Technical High, Haile Selassie High and Bob Marley Primary and Junior High Schools were named as the participating schools in the inaugural Rita Marley Foundation Essay Competition, but based on the success of the first staging, organisers have announced that come next year, the competition will be held on a national level. The announcement was made at an awards ceremony held at the Bob Marley Museum earlier this month.
