VYBZ KARTEL’S “KING OF THE DANCEHALL” ENTERS BILLBOARD CHART!

BY KEVIN JACKSON—  Vybz Kartel— King Of The Dancehall, the latest album from imprisoned deejay Vybz Kartel, debuts at number two this week on the Billboard Reggae Album chart. The Adidjahiem Records/TJ Records product is distributed by Zojak Worldwide. With first-week sales of 1,867 copies (according to sales tracker Nielsen Music), King Of The Dancehall has the biggest first-week sales for a dancehall artiste since Beenie Man’s Undisputed in 2006. Produced by longtime Kartel collaborator Linton ‘TJ’ White, the 14-track set contains the hit songs Fever and Western Union. This is Kartel’s sixth title to chart on Billboard. KINGSTON RADIO JOCK ESCO, UNDER PROBE FOR PLAYING VYBZ KARTEL’S JINGLE!

By Curtis Campbell— Deejay denies being fired from radio station— Radio disc jock and dancehall artiste Esco, formerly of the duo Leftside and Esco, has denied allegations that he was axed from radio station Hot 102 FM for playing a Vybz Kartel Christmas greeting that was allegedly recorded while the artiste was behind bars. USAIN BOLT SPARKS CONTROVERSY AFTER ALLEGEDLY PAYING SELECTORS TO PLAY ONLY GAZA SONGS!

Bolt, a patron at a recent staging of Uptown Mondayz, showed his support for the Gaza group when he took the microphone and led his own set at the session. SINGER JAH VINCI ESCAPES MAJOR INJURIES IN CAR ACCIDENT IN MONTEGO BAY!

By Rosheika Grant— Jah Vinci— Dancehall artist Jah Vinci is now giving thanks for eluding injury after being involved in a car accident on the weekend. The accident happened about 2 p.m. on Saturday, while the artist was travelling from a show in Gutters, Montego Bay, St James. According to a spokesperson, the car Jah Vinci was in spiralled out of control and collided at the roundabout in the Catherine Hall area in St James. The artist was not the one driving when the accident occurred. AFTER FOUR NOMINATIONS, POPCAAN FINALLY WINS THE MOBO AWARD!

 Popcaan— After securing four nominations in as many years, deejay Popcaan finally won the MOBO Award for Best Reggae Act. The event took place on Wednesday night at the Leeds First Direct Arena, in west England. Popcaan, who was not present, won over Chronixx, London-based dancehall artist Stylo G, singjay Protoje and Omi, whose Cheerleader topped the British national chart in 2015. Popcaan is making waves locally with songs including Way Up and Weed is My Best Friend. He has a strong following among dancehall fans in the United Kingdom, thanks to several well-received songs. TAD’S RECORDS RELEASES NEW SERIES “REGGAE COVER JAMMZ VOL.1!”

 LUST—- REGGAE Cover Jammz Vol 1, a new compilation series from Tad’s International Record, was launched last week. The first in the collection has 14 songs. Tad Dawkins, the company’s principal, describes them as ‘personal favourites’. “We are taking the opportunity to expand the Tad’s brand catalogue with the Reggae Cover Jammz series through 10 over the next 10 years,” he said. As its title suggests, ‘Cover Jammz’ are dancehall/reggae renditions of popular songs originally done by pop acts. Some, like LUST’s take on Air Supply’s Just as I Am, were big hits in Jamaica and on regional charts in the United States. BLAK RYNO WANTS OUT OF CONTRACT WITH PRODUCER!

The set, Better Tomorrow, will be on Arison’s JA Productions. “He (Blak Ryno) called me saying that he wanted to terminate the contract. I didn’t tell him not to; all I asked him was that we speak after the album release. But he is saying he wants to do it now.
